Test the patch first

Next you want to get a piece of drywall at least 2" bigger on each side of the hole. I take the sponge and trace it out on the back of the piece of drywall and make 4 cuts, top to bottom on 2 cuts and another 2 small cuts for the sides. Test the patch first to make sure it is a tight fit, you want this patch to be tight in the hole.

   

Now that I am happy with the patch then I put drywall mud on the wall around the hole and more mud on the patch. Put the patch back in the hole and squeeze out as much mud as you can without ripping the paper. Smooth out the mud and continue as a drywall patch.

 

This is the california patch and works great.
