Upcoming shows

I don’t have any contracts signed at this time but I can let you in on a couple shows that I just might be at. In March there is a good show called the International Home and Garden Show. This show is in March, not sure of the dates just yet though. I could be there on the Sunday for two shows, but can’t confirm this as of yet.

Another great show that you don’t want to miss is the CNE. I love doing these shows, I have been told that again I will have about 54 shows on stage here. Wish I could do this full time, it’s stressfull but love it. Three shows a day for 18 days, planning some good stuff for these 18 days, check it out.

Thanks to all the people all over the world.

I would like to put out a thanks to the people who check out this web site from countries like: Japan, Netherlands, England, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, portugal and quite a few other countries. I have a chart that tells me what countries people are from who check out my site. About 50% from Canada and 30% from the states and the rest from other countries, this is cool to me. Thanks.

What is this site?

My name is Shawn, I am a handyman who does all kinds of fix-up jobs, repairs and building in the construction and reno world. I have this web site to show people how to be handy, I am very busy but do this on my own to help other people understand the thinking behind the real world. Hope you enjoy.
Introduction

Hi everybody, Welcome to this months newsletter. Things are really busy right now, trying to get jobs done before the new year. Seems everybody wants to use up the 2006 budget before 2007 (I do lots of commercial work). Love the weather right now, last week poured a concrete slab and this week doing a chain link fence and gates. I plan the inside work for the winter and doing a bathroom reno right now, but it’s nice to get some of the outside jobs done when I can. To be honest with you when I leave the bathroom reno to get these outside jobs done then it means that the bathroom job is going to go on longer then I told the customer. This is how we contractors get the bad name I think, even though we mean well and try to keep everybody happy.
Feature Article

I usually will not comment on other peoples work, I was not there and do not know the story (I can only offer what I might of done). But I have to show these pictures of this job. I see all kinds of different fix up jobs, repairs, and well other people’s work. I can’t remember seeing anything like this before. Now when I travel I usually am alone and work late so I get the cheap motels. In the bathroom of this motel is one of the worst repair jobs I have ever seen. This person who did this was either peeved off at their boss or was drunk, or both. Remember this is a bathroom at a motel, for me, 1 min from the job.

Bathroom wall, you can see the toilet paper roll and the top of the tank of the toilet. Looks like someone had to fix a hole in the ceramic tile wall for whatever reason.

This is a little closer, not the same shape of tile or even close to the colour.

Now we can see that they used two different kinds of tiles.

Forget the tiles for a minute, check out the spacing.

Had to be drunk! Had to be!

Now I’m not the best handyman out there, but the difference with me is that I care. If all I had was these two different tiles to work with then I would not do this job. I do not mean that I would not finish this job, I would go and get tiles that at least somewhat matched this wall, even on my own time. I can’t go home and think about what I did that day and know that I cut so many corners that I ended up with a circle. There is a better chance of lightning coming down my chimney, going around the corner and down the hall and striking me in my chair then me doing a job like this. The difference is in the caring part.

CHECK OUT THE BLOG

I try to put about 4-5 updates a week, these little updates are tips, tricks, how-to’s and even mistakes that I make. I try to show what it is like in the real world, if you make a mistake then the day is not over, you have to fix this mistake to make it right. I try to take pic’s of some of the jobs that I do, just to show some of the things that you are up against. But most of the time I try to show how I would do it, I’m picky and always want to leave feeling that I did the best that I could.

Here is are some examples:

This is a 13"x13" tile that had to be cut to fit around a drain cap. Not a easy cut but looks way better then the fast way with cut tile lines in your job. In the blog around the middle of Dec.

This is a job that I put ceramic tile on the ceiling of the shower, even put two potlights in. Cool job, I think I started it on May 1st, start to finish. Go to the month of May and click on the first, then the second and so on. Worth checking out if you want to be handy.

This is a small concrete job that I did, I was there yesterday and it is still the same. You see I could of cut some corners and just added a quick fix, but if I did then I guarantee you that If I did cut the corners then this job would not look like this today, I took the extra time to cut out the asphlat down just over 4" and filled this with concrete, now the feathered edge is over 4" and will last the forklift going over daily. This is in the blog.

Tip of the month

Want to know if it is latex or oil paint? Try rubbing some nail polish remover with kleenex on it, if it comes off then it is latex, if not then oil.
