Cutting Off a Nail

Ever have a situtation where you take out a piece of wood and have nails sticking out? In this job I had to take out some 2x4’s but wanted to leave the top plate in place. This was a lowered ceiling that was framed years ago above a bathtub. I wanted to leave the top plate in place and frame a new ceiling but when I took out the 2x4’s, nails were sticking out and not wanting to disturb the framing my option was to cut off the nails. |

The tool I choose to use here is a recipacting saw. I put on a bi-metal blade which cuts wood and most metals. Push the blade against the flat part of the wood (this way you cut it off flush with the wood). Keeping the blade flat cut off each nail one at a time. |
When cutting anything with this saw always be prepared for some kickback. This happens usually when the blade hits something and kicks back. Always hold the saw with both hands and if it kicks back hold the saw so it kicks back away from you. If you do this job on a ladder or a step stool take extra care.

Now you have a flat surface and in this case drywall (water resisant) was screwed to the new framing for a new ceiling above this bathtub.
