Canada's Handyman 'April'
Hey Everyone!
Things are starting to come together, finally I can put up pics on different projects and talk about them. I have plans to tell a story on a bathroom reno, well worth looking into if you want to be handy. I plan to show pics from start to finish, with text on each step. I will also show any mistakes that happened and how to correct them. This is something that I have wanted to do for awhile. In my opinion this is a great way to learn and see how the steps are done. If you know anybody who is interested in doing their own reno's or just wants to learn how to be handy, please tell them. This should begin at the start of May, and take about 3 months of tips every other day or so. SO CHECK OUT THE BLOG
Here is the before and after pic's of the bathroom reno I will be showing in my blog starting in May.
I plan on showing a lot of info on this, starting with the take out, then the floor and drywll, tiles and tons more. And if time permits then many more projects after this. Not sure if I will leave posts up past a month, so don't wait to check it out.
Ok, here are some tips and remember 'Ya, Gotta Be Handy, Man'
Ever have to fix a hole or ding in the wall caused by a door handle? A very common fix up job, but what I want to show here is how to avoid that from happening by installing a door stop.

You have many choices on the different types of hardware you can use for this purpose, some might be installed in the hinge, or maybe on the wall as a stop. Here I choose to use this kind, with a concrete floor under the lino this method works well. It comes with the main stop, a lead anchor and a screw. Notice the main stop has a little stub under it. This is so the stop does not turn, you have to drill a hole for it as well as for the anchor.

Start by measuring off the wall by about 4" - 6" (depending on the type of door knob you use). You don't want to get too close to the wall because the door will bend and may still damage wall when slammed or pushed hard. Make sure you have the proper angle so the door stops along the flat part of stop. Mark two holes, one for the little stub and one for the anchor. Here I was going into concrete, so I used a concrete bit. It was a 1/4" anchor so i used a 1/4" bit in a hammer drill for the job. Notice how I keep the drill straight and only go into the concrete only as deep as i need too, which is a little bit more then the anchor's length. Blow on hole to clean dust out. (close your eyes)

Next just hammer the lead anchor into the proper hole.

Now you have a empty hole, but chances are that some concrete dust got into remaining hole as well, you will have to clean this out too. (what i do is just close my eyes and blow on it)

Place door stop in place and add screw. Be carefull here as usually these screws strip easy.

Now that you have fixed the problem of the door handle going into the wall, it's time to fix the wall. But that will have to wait for another day.
Anybody interested in making wood crafts then check out CH Morning Live on Friday April / 14. I should be on just after 8am, not sure with who at this time.
Check out the blog (if you or anybody you know wants to be handy)
